Trump Accounts for Children: A New Opportunity (But Not a Complete Plan)
If you’ve welcomed a child or grandchild since January 1, 2025, you’ve probably heard about the Trump Account program. Eligible children born between 2025 and 2028 may receive a $1,000 government-funded contribution to help jump-start long-term savings.
What We’ve Seen with Clients
Several clients have already opened these accounts, and one pleasant surprise has been how easy the application process is. The online portal is user-friendly and includes projections showing what the account could potentially be worth in the future. While those projections are only estimates, they can be a great way to teach children the power of investing, compound growth, and long-term saving.
Additionally, we’ve also seen a few common misconceptions:
- A Trump Account is not a replacement for a 529 plan, which generally offers greater flexibility for education expenses and may provide state tax benefits.
- The account ultimately belongs to the child; once the child reaches the applicable age, the account may not provide the same level of control and protections that many families desire.
- Larger contributions from grandparents and others may raise gift-tax reporting questions, so families should consult their tax advisors before making significant gifts.
The Estate Planning Connection
While the new accounts can be a valuable savings tool, they do not replace the basics of estate planning. Parents of young children should still make sure they have:
- A Will naming guardians for minor children
- Powers of attorney and health care documents
- Beneficiary designations coordinated with their overall plan
- Trust planning for probate avoidance, asset protection, or long-term management of an inheritance
In our view, Trump Accounts can be a worthwhile addition to a family’s financial plan, particularly given the initial government contribution and the opportunity for long-term growth. However, they work best as part of a broader estate and financial planning strategy rather than as a stand-alone solution.
